Democrats Call for Trump's Removal After Attack on Venezuela

A group of Democratic representatives in the U.S. Congress have challenged the recent actions of the Trump administration in Venezuela, including the bombing of various locations in the country and the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores.

The lawmakers have gone so far as to demand the removal of President Trump following the attacks, which occurred without prior notification. Democrats have denounced the lack of consultation in this matter—a highly significant foreign policy event—heightening tensions between both political factions.

In this regard, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries issued a statement requesting that Congress be briefed "by early next week."

Gregory Meeks, the senior-ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated he had received no prior information or warning. "At that time, I received all the information from the media," added the Democrat.

Separately, focusing less on requests for information, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez released a statement declaring that "Trump must be impeached" and called for a resolution to limit the president’s war powers. Democratic Representative Dan Goldman condemned the actions, commenting that "this violation of the United States Constitution is an impeachable offense."

The Democratic opposition has also criticized Trump’s plan, with Representative Jared Huffman calling it "truly unhinged." The Democrat further noted that the country has entered the territory of the Twenty-fifth Amendment, which provides the constitutional path to remove a president from office.

Doubts have also emerged from within the Republican Party regarding the administration’s decision. Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, addressing Trump’s plan suggesting the U.S. would take charge of Venezuela, stated that "the only country the United States should ‘run’ is the United States of America."

President Trump remarked that the attack occurred without notification because Congress "has a tendency to leak" important information, while also requesting that media outlets not publish anything prior to the attack to avoid endangering U.S. troops. The assault on Venezuela marks a new escalation in threats maintained by the U.S. government in recent months, which had already claimed innocent lives in Caribbean and Pacific waters.
