China today reaffirmed its policy of continuity and stability toward Latin America and the Caribbean, again condemned United States military actions in Venezuela, and rejected threats against Colombia and Cuba.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that, regardless of changes in the international situation, China has been a good friend and partner to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
He noted that Beijing's policy toward the region is based on non-interference in internal affairs, respect for the decisions of the people, and the absence of ideological lines. He pointed out that exchanges and cooperation follow principles of equal treatment, mutual benefit, and shared results, without seeking spheres of influence or attacking third parties.
Lin reiterated Beijing's willingness to deepen mutual strategic trust and to support each other on matters of fundamental interest such as sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. He indicated that China supports countries in the region in choosing a development path suited to their national conditions and opposes hegemonism and power politics.
In response to a question on Venezuela, he expressed concern over the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the United States and their removal from the country. He emphasized that such actions violate international law and the principles of the UN Charter, while reiterating the call for Washington to guarantee their personal safety and release them immediately.
He added that China supports the UN Security Council in convening an emergency meeting on the U.S. military attack on Venezuela and in fulfilling its responsibilities.
Regarding threats from President Donald Trump against Colombia and Cuba, Lin stated that China supports the status of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace and opposes actions that violate international law and the UN Charter. The spokesperson rejected any use or threat of force and all external interference in the internal affairs of Latin American countries under any pretext.
Previously, Foreign Minister Wang Yi had expressed Beijing's rejection of any single nation acting as the "world's police" and international judge.
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this Monday, January 5, to address the military aggression against Venezuela amid widespread rejection of these events by the international community.
