The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, highlighted today during a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council the role of that body as a bulwark of multilateralism, consensus, cooperation, and dialogue among nations.
Addressing via videoconference the summit taking place in Moscow, Russia, the President noted that five years have passed since Cuba joined as an observer state of the Eurasian Economic Union.
“Five years ago, we not only formalized a link, we also opened a strategic chapter of dialogue and rapprochement for a future of greater exchange, integration, and cooperation,” he emphasized.
Díaz-Canel warned of the complex global scenario, marked by unilateralism, the disregard for multilateral institutions, and the violation of the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law.
In this context, he denounced the persistence of unilateral coercive measures aimed at suffocating economies and punishing entire populations.
“The alliance between our nations stands as a bulwark of multilateralism, consensus, cooperation, and dialogue,” he stated.
The Cuban president strongly rejected these illegal practices and expressed his deep gratitude to all countries of the Eurasian Economic Union for their continued support of the resolution demanding an end to the tightened U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba.
He recalled that an overwhelming majority of countries in the United Nations General Assembly approved the condemnation of this policy, despite unprecedented pressure exerted by the current U.S. administration.
Caribbean Tensions
During his speech, Díaz-Canel also addressed the escalating tensions in the Caribbean caused by U.S. actions against Venezuela. In this regard, he warned that, added to the enormous challenges facing humanity, are the new U.S. National Security Strategy and what he termed the “Trump corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine.
“In a blatant manner, the U.S. government attempts to impose the idea that the Western Hemisphere is its exclusive zone of influence and promotes the aberrant concept of peace through force,” he denounced.
The president reiterated that such actions violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, international law, and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
“Cuba has denounced and alerted the international community about the dangerous and threatening military escalation in the Caribbean by the U.S. government,” he emphasized.
“This aeronaval deployment in the region and the threat of military aggression against Venezuela reveal the imperial, hegemonic, and criminal purpose of the administration currently occupying the White House,” he concluded.
