Diaz-Canel reiterates call for debate on new Family Code

Havana, February 2 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stressed the importance of the new Family Code, in the process of popular consultation, and reiterated the call to the population to study and enrich it.

"The more details I learn about the Family Code, the more I am convinced that it is essential for today's Cuban society. Now that the Popular Consultation is starting, I invite my compatriots to review it and get to know it.  We can all contribute," the president wrote on Twitter.

Since February 1, more than seven million voters and Cubans living abroad have been summoned to debate until April 30 this legal regulation, considered by experts as advanced, inclusive and adjusted to the current reality.

The proposals derived from this round of analysis by the population will be submitted to the Drafting Commission for processing in May, and evaluation by the Parliament, which will approve a new version to be submitted to a popular referendum.

Among other aspects, the Code proposes a greater inclusion, not only of people diverse for reasons of their sexual orientation, but also different for their age, the exercise of capacity and plurality.

According to the president of the Cuban Society of Civil and Family Law, Leonardo Pérez, the regulation recognizes multiparentality and socio-affective relationships, which makes it one of the most groundbreaking in Latin America.
