Iraq interested in buying anti-aircraft system from Russia
Baghdad, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) Iraq will seek to buy anti-aircraft systems from Russia, as Saran al-Aajibi, member of the Security and Defense Council of the Arab country's Parliament, told Rudaw on Thursday.
Iraq needs 'modern radars, an advanced missile system and new technologies, and to train air defence personnel on these modern systems and weapons,' council member Saran al-Aajibi said.
Al-Aajibi confirmed that Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein will travel to Moscow with this goal in the near future.
'The security and defence council had asked the government to diversify our source of weaponry and not only rely on one country... if the relationship between the two countries worsens, then our source of weaponry will also vanish,' al-Aajibi stated.
The United States warned Iraq of the consequences of establishing military cooperation with Russia and purchasing sophisticated weaponry, especially S-400 missile systems.
Washington threatened Baghdad with applying the so-called Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), should Iraq buy arms from Moscow.
CAATSA was passed in August 2017, with punitive measures against Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
