Former President Mujica criticizes Uruguay's affinity with US
Montevideo, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) Former President Jose Mujica on Monday criticized the foreign policy of the current Uruguayan Government, which is closer and more related to the United States and which he described as 'pro-Yankee'.
As an example, Mujica said that Uruguay voted for Maurice Claver Carone, a security advisor and a candidate promoted by US President Donald Trump to head the Inter-American Bank (IAB), thus breaking the tradition of reserving that post to a Latin American.
During an interview with the Subrayado (Underlined) TV program, Mujica directly blamed President Luis Lacalle Pou of that bias, and described him as a 'resentful' person who gets angry when criticized.
The veteran senator also mentioned as an adverse sign in Uruguayan diplomacy the frequent contacts with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, through telephone calls to the Uruguayan president and more recently by welcoming Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo.
Days before visiting Washington, where he met with the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, Bustillo dismissed an official who had voted in favor of a United Nations Resolution condemning the human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinian children and women.
