Beijing, Sep 13 (Prensa Latina) Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi temporarily blocked some mobile phones in countries such as Cuba, Sudan and Syria to prevent and investigate possible smuggling of its devices, local press informed on Monday.

According to Global Times, a company's spokesperson explained that the measure was aimed at preventing damages to 'information security and consumers' rights', but did not target 'any specific market.'

The blockade of Xiaomi smartphones in the hands of owners residing in nations such as Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan and the Russian Autonomous Republic of Crimea generated concern few days ago.

The Chinese firm has not set up an official presence in any of those countries and some media outlets even linked the event to the extraterritoriality of US sanctions imposed against those territories.

Xiaomi was founded in Beijing under the leadership of entrepreneur Lei Jun and with the premise of offering state-of-the-art technology, quality and affordable prices.
