Geneva, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) ranked on Friday Covid-19 as the fifth leading cause of death in the world and warned that it is far from over; that is why, it urged people to be mentally prepared.

In the face of that possible scenario, Maria Van Kerkhove, responsible for managing the pandemic at the WHO, commented that disagreements in science and politics make more difficult the fight against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which already totals 1.09 million deaths and over 38.5 million infections.

In addition, the director for Europe of the WHO, Hans Kluge, highlighted that the number of daily Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions is increasing.

Based on its forecasts, the United Nations health agency warned that a mortality rate could be four or five times higher than in April if the restrictions are lifted prematurely.

In that sense, Van Kerkhove noted that countries are desperate due to the recession caused by the pandemic and the way it affects social and cultural life, sports, the labor market, healthcare systems and even electoral campaigns.
