The Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe announced today the next meeting of its members to define actions against a new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in the United Kingdom.

Through his profile on Twitter, the director of said body, Hans Kluge, specified that the meeting will focus on the approval of strategies to promote diagnostic tests, reduce transmission and explain the risks to citizens.

Kluge did not specify the date of the meeting, but assured that the WHO is closely monitoring the findings on the VUI-202012/01 variant and advocated solidarity among the more than 50 States belonging to the regional entity.

No one is safe until everyone is safe, he said, welcoming the UK's initiative to share information and intensify research on the new strain.

He also advised limiting travel to contain the spread, but asked to allow essential movements and the supply of basic necessities.

Kluge indicated that the VUI – 202012/01 is spreading more rapidly and the level of severity is not yet clear, so he considered it essential to strengthen prevention measures.

Following the identification of the strain, the British government imposed a stricter alert system on London and other cities in England last week, similar to the lockdown in November.

More than 40 nations decided to temporarily suspend flights and transport of cargo and passengers to and from the United Kingdom, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Austria, France and Germany.
