Virtual demonstration in Brazil against Bolsonaro's speech at UN

Brasilia, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) Social movements and environmentalists held a virtual demonstration on Tuesday against the fires in the 'Pantanal', a paradise of Brazil's biodiversity, during President Jair Bolsonaro's speech at the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Organized by the Climate Observatory and Agenda GT 2030, which denounce Bolsonaro's environmental agenda, the protest warned about the Government's poor performance in light of deforestation and forest fires in the Amazonia, Cerrado and Pantanal, the country's major biomasses.

The protest was held on Twitter with the hashtags #ChegaDeQueimadas (No more burnings) and #StopTheFires.

In addition, the environmentalists asked people to hold a pot-banging protest during the president's speech.

Brasil 247 reported on its website that Bolsonaro used his speech at the United Nations 'to lie openly and blame the indigenous peoples again for the fires'.

About 16,000 fires have occurred between January 1 and September 21 in Brazil, as a result of which more than two million hectares have been devastated, more than 12.5 million hectares damaged in 2002, when a record in burnings was reported.
