Venezuelan Parliament to Investigate Migrant Crimes in Colombia

The special commission of the National Assembly that investigates crimes against Venezuelan migrants abroad installed its sub-commission on the Case of Colombia. The group is chaired by Deputy Ilenia Medina, along with Deputies Gilberto Jiménez, Carmen Zerpa, Julio Chávez and Tania González.

Medina reported that during the commission’s first weeks of operation, they collected testimonies about the frequent use of Venezuelans to involve them in human trafficking, drug trafficking, and disappearances of children.

“In most cases they are retained without the consent of their parents, ruling out the use of mutual assistance mechanisms contemplated in the treaties and agreements signed between both nations, which remain in force despite any break in diplomatic relations. ”, He stressed.

According to a press release from Parliament, this commission has five subcommittees.

The first will analyze the policies and hate speech promoted by some governments in the region and how this affects Venezuelan migrants around the world.

The purpose of the second subcommittee will be to study the comparative law of regulations referring to migration and refugee and Venezuelan laws, as well as the international treaties signed with the purpose of guaranteeing the human rights of migrants regardless of nationality.

The third subcommission works in the area of ​​receiving complaints in person and supported by the use of digital mechanisms that facilitate access by Venezuelans from anywhere in the world, guaranteeing the privacy of the affected party, and the fourth subcommittee aims to systematize the complaints and their supports.

These working groups were formed by agreement of the Parliament, after the assassination of two Venezuelan minors, which occurred last month in the neighboring country, which shocked public opinion and uncovered more than a hundred disappearances.
