A donation from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) was received today at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital in Holguín, providing support for the local health system as part of the recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.

María del Carmen Noris Mariño, head of international relations for the sector's general directorate, emphasized to the Cuban News Agency that the shipment includes medical supplies, equipment, mosquito nets, and oral rehydration salts, among other essential items.

The expert indicated that this delivery is part of "UNICEF's response to emergency situations, with priority given to the health of children, pregnant women, postpartum women, adolescents, and women in adverse contexts, such as the impact caused by the meteorological phenomenon."

She noted that a provincial team has been established to distribute these kits as swiftly as possible, prioritizing the most severely affected healthcare units and municipalities.

Noris Mariño highlighted the organization's sensitivity and solidarity, expressing gratitude for its contribution to the well-being of the most vulnerable populations during the recovery phase.

Leonardo Guerra, director of the Holguín Medical Supply Company (Emsume), reported that this is the first of three containers of medical supplies planned for the region, with the remaining two currently undergoing customs procedures at the port of Mariel.

He specified that this aid will facilitate healthcare services and enhance patient well-being amid the challenging conditions caused by Hurricane Melissa.

UNICEF is the United Nations agency dedicated to children, with a mission to protect the rights of all children, particularly the most disadvantaged and those in hard-to-reach areas.

It operates in over 190 countries, providing services in education, health, and nutrition, alongside violence prevention, access to clean water, and protection against climate change and diseases.
