The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) confirmed its support to Cuba in the rehabilitation of local food production in the affected areas after the passage of hurricane Ian last September through the western part of the country.

A statement from the group accredited in Havana informed that the support for this objective is financed by the Belgian government, from the Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities - Response Capacity for Agricultural Inputs.

It announced that 500,000 dollars have been allocated to purchase roofs for the repair of 30 poultry houses, which will allow 2,380 people to recover their livelihoods in the most affected municipalities in the provinces of Pinar del Rio and Artemisa.

According to FAO-Cuba, the investment will increase the availability of eggs in the communities and the consumption of animal protein, which will contribute to improving the nutrition and health of 1,425,000 vulnerable people (285,000 households), including under-five children and pregnant and lactating women.

Marcelo Resende, FAO Representative in the country, last October toured some of the municipalities of Pinar del Rio most damaged by the terrible hurricane.
