UN calls to restore hope in solving Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Ramallah, Nov 29 (Prensa Latina) The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, warned that the solution of the two states to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is increasingly distant and urged to restore hope in it, Wafa stressed today.

A series of factors continue to cause great suffering, among them the expansion of illegal (Israeli) settlements, the significant increase in demolition of Palestinean houses and structures, violence continues and consequently the militant activity, stressed the highest representative of the United Nations (UN).

In a message on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestine, Guterres assured that he remains committed to supporting the efforts to solve the long confrontation, end the (Zionist) occupation in accordance with the resolutions of the multilateral body and previous agreements, in pursuit from the vision of two states living in peace, Wafa news agency reported.

Referring to the materialization of that perspective, he pointed out that the future sovereign territory for Palestinians should be established on the basis of the borders prior to 1967, year when Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

He also defended the special status of Jerusalem, as the capital of both, informed the news agency.

Israeli and Palestinian leaders have the responsibility to exploit all opportunities to restore hope and achieve a way out (…) I hope that recent events will encourage them to re-engage in meaningful negotiations, with the support of the international community, he insisted.

During his virtual speech before the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, sought the support of said organization to convene an international peace conference, focused on channeling a process of dialogue with Tel Aviv.

Leaders of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have accused the Israeli government of intensifying its expansion program in the latter town in order to impose fait accompli policies before outgoing US President Donald Trump leaves the White House in January.

At the beginning of the year Trump presented the disputed Deal of the Century, under which Israel could annex up to 30 percent of the West Bank.

In recent months, clashes between villagers in defense of their lands and Jewish settlers (there are more than 700,000), the latter supported by the military, have increased in tone.
