Trump against Cuba

Havana._ The President of the United States, Donald Trump, again followed the script of a policy against Cuba overwhelmingly considered as failed, when he announced new measures aimed at further tightening the blockade.

It's not surprising that on September 23, just six weeks before the November 3 election, in which he is seeking reelection, the Republican ruler announced new measures that further reverse the bilateral rapprochement started during the Barack Obama administration (2009-2017).

In an event held at the White House with leaders of what remains of the 2506 mercenary brigade which suffered a crushing defeat in Cuba during the foiled Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs) invasion in April, 1961, Trump made public that his administration will prevent US travellers from staying in properties owned by the Cuban government.

According to a Treasury Department communiqué, that means that the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) will prohibit any person subject to US jurisdiction to stay, pay for accommodation or make reservations in a property identified as owned by the island's government.

Such a step will also be extended to properties belonging to persons classified by the State Department as 'prohibited', including Cuban government officials, members of the Cuban Communist Party or close relatives.

Likewise, OFAC will eliminate general travel authorizations related to attending or holding professional conferences or meetings, public presentations, clinics, workshops and other sports or non-sports competitions on the island.

As a result of the amendment, the only remaining general license related to participating or holding sports competitions in Cuba will be the one dealing with amateur or semi-professional sportsmen or teams, the Treasury Department pointed out.
