Second wave of Covid-19 in South Africa reaches record numbers

The second wave of Covid-19 affecting South Africa caused 16,726 new cases in the last 24 hours, leading to a cumulative total of 1,073,887 infected.

According to the daily report of the Minister of Health, Zweli Mkhize, positive cases of the coronavirus increased on average by 12,933 per day during the past week.

According to estimations there are currently 157,299 active Covid-19 cases in the country, along with 887,701 recoveries and 28,887 deaths, counted since March last year, when the first infected in the country was detected.

Those figures represent a recovery rate of 82.6 percent, according to report.

Also, 418 people died due to the pandemic in the last 24 hours.

Also according to the report, the southern provinces of Eastern Cape and Western Cape, with 7,382 and 6,977, respectively, account for most of the accumulated deaths.

On average, during the last week 373 deaths were reported per day.

Mkhize made a special call recently to all South Africans to help protect health workers against Covid-19, respecting all established socio-health security protocols.
