Scholar nominates Cuban medical brigades for Nobel Peace Prize

Panama, Dec 2 (Prensa Latina) The former candidate to Panama's Vice Presidency Maribel Gordon nominated on Wednesday the Cuban medical Henry Reeve Contingent for the Nobel Peace Prize for its work to save lives in many countries around the world.
 
'Cuba, a country that has been harassed for over 60 years, has shown the world that another type of human relations are possible,' Gordon stated to Prensa Latina, adding that a clear example of it is this group of healthcare professionals who only this year provided their services to 29 nations to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

She explained that the members of the Henry Reeve Contingent attended some 550,000 patients and saved the lives of over 12,400 of them in the last months, and thus responded to the need for solidarity and international cooperation in the face of the health crisis in the world, Gordon said.

As part of the arguments for the Nobel candidacy, the also academic and economist highlighted that previous the current pandemic, 28 of those Cuban health brigades traveled to 22 countries to assist the victims of floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and epidemics, among them Ebola in West Africa and cholera in Haiti.

Gordon also praised the 15 years of existence of the Henry Reeve Contingent that she described as 'memorable,' whose humanitarian actions involved some 9,000 Cuban healthcare professionals who provided medical care to four million people and saved more than 89,000 lives, she assured.

The also Vice-President of the 'Frente Amplio por la Democracia' party recalled that Cuba is one of the 30 countries that are developing vaccine candidates for immunization against Covid-19.
