Moscow, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova rejected accusations by the Sofia Government against her country's diplomats for allegedly participating in espionage actions, local press informed on Tuesday.

Mitrofanova called for an end to what she described as 'spy show,' in which authorities in Bulgaria have declared two Russian diplomats persona non grata, an accusation that Moscow considered unfounded, RIA Novosti news agency informed as of an interview with the diplomat to Bulgarian newspaper 24 Chasa (24 Hours).

The diplomat also denounced the escalation of this kind of rhetoric, through which, since late 2019, the Bulgarian Government regularly finds fictitious reasons to expel Russian diplomats.

The Russian ambassador stressed that the evidence presented by Sofia of the spying activities by six Bulgarian citizens for Moscow does not have a direct connection with the work done by the Russian diplomatic mission in that country.

During 2020, on more than one occasion, Bulgaria expelled Russian diplomats suspected of espionage, without providing any evidence that they had carried out any activity incompatible with their status.
