Victor Koronelli, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cuba, stated to the TASS news agency that the United States has deployed an unprecedented pressure campaign this year on countries of the Global South. This effort comes ahead of the scheduled October 29th vote on the resolution against the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed on Cuba at the UN General Assembly.

The diplomat recalled that the resolution has been approved for many consecutive years by an overwhelming majority, with only the United States and Israel systematically voting against it.

He explained that on occasion, some Pacific Island states and allies of Washington have abstained from voting, as was the case with Moldova in 2023 and Ukraine in 2022.

Koronelli described Kiev's position as inconsistent, pointing out that Cuba hosted children from Ukraine affected by the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the 1990s free of charge.

The Ambassador reiterated that the pressure exerted this year by the United States seeks to undermine support for the resolution, an issue that was also addressed at the recent press conference by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

According to the diplomat, the vote will constitute a test to measure the ability of other countries to resist American pressure.

Koronelli expressed his expectation that the majority of UN member states will maintain their support and vote in favor of the resolution demanding the end of the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba.
