Moscow, Jan 19 (Prensa Latina) Russia on Tuesday denounced the US aggressive pressure and illegal actions to prevent the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, following the approval of a new package of sanctions against the construction companies.

Washington's measures are illegal, even from the point of view of international law, estimated the Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, in commenting on the restrictions applied against the Fortuna vessel, involved in the work of the aforementioned gas pipeline.

The United States also announced penalties against the KVT-Rus company, owner of the aforementioned vessel.

The construction of this international project faces serious obstacles and illegal pressure from the United States, he noted.

We regret those steps, but we are closely following the situation and analyzing it, aimed at continuing the work to complete the construction of this project, the spokesperson highlighted.

The pipeline, over 2,000 kilometers long, of which only about 160 are left to be built, would carry some 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year directly from terminals in northern Russia to Germany, through the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

Washington is trying to prevent the completion of Nord Stream 2 under the argument that its operation would supposedly endanger European energy security, but is proposing to the Old Continent its compressed shale gas, with a much higher value, the local press points out.
