Moscow, Apr 30 (Prensa Latina) The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday declared the need that the governments of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan reach a lasting agreement to prevent new border clashes.

The Moscow Ministry underlined in a communique that it follows with concern the escalation of tensions on the border between the two nations.

'We call on the parties to achieve, through negotiations in the spirit of partnership and good neighbor policy, a sustainable and lasting agreement that will normalize the situation and take measures to prevent such incidents,' the statement noted.

Russia welcomed the agreements reached on Thursday about the ceasefire and withdrawal of troops on the border line and expressed its willingness to contribute to solve all kinds of discrepancies through political means, the text stated.

Approximately, half of the 970-kilometer-long Kyrgyz-Tajik border remains unmarked after the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Sputnik news agency warned.

For years, such a situation has caused disputes over the use of land and water resources, reporting clashes among neighbors who were on opposite sides of the dividing line.
