Guatemala, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu on Monday joined the voices that condemn here the overuse of force against the mostly peaceful protest on Saturday in Guatemala.

'The national civil police have violently repressed peaceful protesters. We demand to open a full investigation and the immediate dismissal of the minister of the Interior, the deputy minister of Security and the director of the PNC,' Menchu tweeted.

Three days ago, in response to a proposal from Vice President Guillermo Castillo to resign from his post along with President Alejandro Giammattei, due to the current political crisis, the human rights defender issued a communiqué calling for dialogue with all sectors in order to find a way out of the generalized rejection of the approval of the 2021 Budget.

In her message at the time, Menchu showed her support for Castillo, to whom 'I present my solidarity, I cheer him up and I support him in this difficult struggle in the face of the challenges he faces,' she said.

'With all humility and respect I join the call of the citizens to reject the approval of the Income and Expenditure Law of the State for the Fiscal Year 2021. I also join in their request to ask for the presidential veto in the face of such an approval by the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala,' she pointed out in the letter addressed to the vice president.
