Cuba's Prime Minister Manuel Marrero today greeted the debut of the island's champion team, Agricultores, in the Caribbean Baseball Series 2023 that opened today in Caracas, Venezuela. The Cubans beat Curazao 3-1 in the opener.
The team made up of players of the eastern provinces of Granma and Las Tunas will stop being Agricultures to be just Cuba, as manager Carlos Martí said, Marrero wrote in Twitter.
The head of government wrote in his Twitter account “have fun boys, and let those bats sound in the ‘Gran Caracas 2023′ Caribbean Series”,’ .
According to the competition schedule, the Cuban team will play Dominican Republic, and then Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Panama.
Starter Cesar Garcia pitched seven good innings, allowing just one earned run. SS Alexis de la Cruz hit a home-run in the top of the 8th inning to tie the game. Releiver Andy Vargas made a brilliant three-inning job to win the game.
The game went into extrainnings. Agricultores scored 2 runs in the top of the 10th to win their opener.
Agricultores won the first Cuban Elite League, a competition that grouped the best players of the country without contracts abroad.
Their main weapon was powerful hitting, and with it they practically had no rival during the domestic competitions, except in the Final in which they were on the brink of losing to Portuarios.
