Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel lamented the death of baseball player Pedro José Rodríguez, nicknamed Señor Jonrón (Mister Home Run), and conveyed condolences to his family and friends.

From his official Twitter account, the president wrote: "Sensitive loss for Cuban sports and baseball.  I remember the many emotions he made us feel with his timely and kilometric home runs."

The well-known Cuban baseball player died the day before at the age of 65, in the central province of Cienfuegos.  Pedro Jose Rodriguez was a member of Cuban teams and was world champion in the competitions held in Colombia (1976), Italy (1978), Japan (1980) and Cuba (1984).

He also won gold medals in the VII, VIII and IX Pan American Games, and in the XIII Central American and Caribbean Games.

His debut in the National Series was the best of all time, and his start with the island's national team was also outstanding, as he led the statistics in batting, home runs and runs batted in.
