Havana, Dec 20 (Prensa Latina) A total of 103 media outlets from 20 countries participated in the 57th edition of the Prensa Latina Sports Survey, which today awarded the best Latin American and Caribbean athletes in 2021.

Cuban fighter Mijaín López, who became a four-time Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020, led the Best Male Athlete category, while the Venezuelan tripler Yulimar Rojas, starter and world record holder (15.67 meters) in the Japanese capital, led the award among the ladies.

In the team category, the Argentine soccer squad triumphed, monarch in the Copa América in Brazil 2021, by beating the local squad 1-0 in the South American super classic, with leading role for the scorer, Ángel Di María, and the Most Valuable of the tournament, Lionel Messi.

The Prensa Latina Sports Poll, which this time included 103 media from 20 countries, came to life in 1964 and the first winner was Cuban sprinter Enrique Figuerola, Olympic runner-up that year in Tokyo in the men’s 100-meter sprint.
