‘For us, this is the day of resistance, of life over death, of freedom over slavery, of the republican idea over monarchy,’ he stressed.
On Wednesday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro criticized Spain for celebrating October 12 as a holiday, stating that this date symbolizes the beginning of genocide, slavery, and colonialism in the Americas.

“On October 12, they celebrate ‘the Day of the Race,’ Spain’s National Day. Couldn’t they find another day? For all of the Americas, October 12 marks the beginning of genocide. It’s not a day to celebrate. For us, this is the day of resistance, of life over death, of freedom over slavery, of the republican idea over monarchy,” the Bolivarian leader stressed.
His statements came a day after the Venezuelan National Assembly approved a resolution urging the Spanish government to abolish the monarchy, arguing that such an institution is linked to corruption and is an “expression of the extreme right.”
This resolution was proposed by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez in response to Spain’s interference in Venezuelan affairs, specifically when the Spanish Congress recognized the far-right opposition politician Edmundo Gonzalez as “president-elect of Venezuela.”
In this resolution, the Venezuelan National Assembly asked President Maduro to consider breaking diplomatic and commercial relations with Spain and to implement reciprocal actions in response to the Spanish Congress’s rude and interventionist stance against Bolivarian institutions.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Diosdado Cabello, Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), called for a march to commemorate Indigenous Resistance Day.
“On Saturday, we will respond to the king of Spain. We will march in honor of indigenous resistance and our own values,” he said, recalling that the so-called “discovery of America” marked the beginning of the European genocide against Indigenous peoples.
