Caracas, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro celebrated Cuba's victory at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Tuesday.

'US Imperialism failed in its effort. From Venezuela we congratulate the heroic Cuban people!' wrote Maduro, who noted the 170 votes that Cuba won at the General Assembly to join the Council for a three-year period (2012-2023).

According to official reports, 88% of UN member States supported Cuba, which will hold a seat at the Human Rights Council for the fifth time.

The UN Human Rights Council was established on March 15, 2006, and is made up 47 countries that are elected directly and secretly at the General Assembly.

Cuba is a founding member of the Council and it has held a seat in it for two consecutive periods until December 2012. It later held a seat for two other periods in a row (2014-2016 and 2017-2019).
