New Italian monitoring of Alpine glaciers in climate emergency

Rome, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) The environmental association Legambiente on Friday has announced the start of a new monitoring in the state of 13 Alpine glaciers and the Calderone glacier, threatened by a climate emergency.

The second edition of the Glacier Caravan is scheduled to take place from August 23 to September 13, and the Italian Glaciological Committee (IGC) will accompany Legambiente in this mission, through which the 13 glaciers will be observed, in addition to the Calderone glacier, located in the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo, below Corno Grande, the highest peak in the Apennines.

A communique pointed out that Legambiente and the IGC will carry out scientific monitoring at high altitudes to observe the historical variations of the glaciers and glacial transformations, following the model of the glaciological campaigns the IGC has been annually conducting since 1911.

In its message, Legambiente recalled the alert from scientific studies, which warn that most of them could disappear late century, and those below 3,500 meters will probably suffer the same fate by 2050.

This campaign is included in the All4Climate-Italy platform that gathers all the events dedicated to the fight against climate change in view of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), scheduled for November in Glasgow, Scotland.
