A federal operation targeting migrants commenced this week in North Carolina as part of the actions by the administration of US President Donald Trump, purportedly to “keep Americans safe and remove threats to public security.”

Initial Detentions in Charlotte
The operation began in the city of Charlotte, where the first migrant detentions took place. Among those arrested were between 15 and 20 members of a church, who were surprised while performing gardening work on the property.

The raids were carried out under the directives of President Donald Trump and Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. However, local authorities described the event as an action that generates fear and insecurity, contrary to the stated goal of protecting the population.

Legal and Social Backlash
Among the detainees are individuals with no criminal records, which has provoked reprisals and social rejection against what is perceived as procedures without legal backing.

Charlotte became the epicenter of the detentions after Trump singled out the city as an example of a Democrat-run city that, according to him, was not doing enough to protect its citizens following crimes allegedly committed by immigrants.

A Recurring National Pattern
Concurrently, Chicago has been the scene of multiple raids in recent months, with thousands of migrants arrested and subsequently released because the detentions lacked legal guarantees, a pattern that has repeated in several regions of the country.

The measure primarily affects undocumented migrants, but it has also generated concern among naturalized migrants, who fear that Trump's policies will drive an increase in deportations and alter criteria such as birthright citizenship.

The deployment of these operations reflects a hardening of immigration policy, which has unleashed criticism for its impact on vulnerable communities and for the doubts surrounding its legality.
