Buenos Aires, Apr 29 (Prensa Latina) The death of Cuban musician Rafael de la Torre, founder of the Nueva Trova musical movement, who died on Thursday from Covid-19, caused a great commotion in this capital.

A resident of Argentina since the 1990s, De la Torre was much loved within the Argentine artistic community and also by his Cuban fellow citizens living here, who mourn his death.

Defender of his homeland and of the Cuban Revolution, easygoing and with a powerful captivating voice, Rafaelito or Rafa, as he was affectionately called, fought hard against Covid-19, which kept him in an intensive care unit for several days while his wife also fights today against the lethal disease.

Born in the Cuban city of Camagüey, in the 1960s he embarked on the great adventure of founding the Nueva Trova, along with Silvio Rodriguez, Pablo Milanes, Noel Nicola and other musicians of that generation.

Member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and the Argentine Association of Interpreters, during his outstanding career he toured over 40 countries with his music before settling in Argentina, which welcomed him as his second homeland.

With approximately 200 songs, he received the 1984 National Music Award and also in Argentina he participated in the 'Al fin el mar' film in 2003.
