Havana, Apr 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stressed on Friday that the use of lies by the United States government is still present in international media campaigns against the island.

Through his Twitter account, the minister recalled the deceptions of the northern representative at the United Nations in 1961 when he 'lied to hide that his government was the perpetrator of the invasion of Playa Giron.'

On April 15, 1961, warplanes with false Cuban acronyms simultaneously attacked the San Antonio de los Baños air base, the Ciudad Libertad airstrip, in the capital, and the airport in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba.

It was the prelude to the invasion of Playa Giron two days later and the attempt to destroy the scarce and ancient revolutionary air force on the ground.

'Faced with the victims of the mercenary bombings, Fidel declared in 1961 the socialist character of the Revolution,' Rodriguez tweeted.

Cuba was also waging a diplomatic battle within the UN.

The then foreign minister, Raul Roa, denounced the bombing and blamed the US authorities.

On April 17, the debates in the world body continued and the Cuban position received wide support.

Meanwhile, on the sands of Playa Larga, west of the island, the mercenary landing began.

Washington's plans failed as the invaders were defeated in less than three days by militia forces, the Rebel Army and the National Revolutionary Police.

'Cuba will remain firm and faithful to the chosen path,' concludes the Cuban foreign minister's tweet.
