Havana, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba can give the world an example of food sovereignty and nutrition education, Frei Betto, Brazilian theologian, advisor to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said today.

On the occasion of World Food Day, the Brazilian theologian stated Cuba has several reasons to celebrate, as it provides the Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education (SAN), passed in July 2020 and the first one of its kind in the country.

In an interview with Cubadebate, Frei Betto recalled that since the beginning of the Cuban Revolution, the country no longer appears on UN´s hunger list, and also pointed out that Cuba nowadays has much greater posibilities thanks to the FNS strategy.

Frei Betto praised Cuba's response to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, for not having hungry people, for fulfilling the development goals set by the United Nations, and also for adding to the SAN Agenda Cuba's economic, social and environmental strategy.

As part of the interview, Frei betto insisted that Cuba has the great advantage of not looking at food as a merchandise, but as a right of each person and the population in general.

Betto called on the need to overcome all blockades: the one imposed by the United States on Cuba, and the psychological and cultural one 'that there is within the people who do not work.'
