HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 29 (ACN) Cuba and the World Free Zones Organization (World FZO) highlighted the benefits of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZED) to attract foreign and domestic investment.

As reported on Twitter by Manuel Marrero Cruz, Cuban PM, during a meeting with Mohammed Al Zarooni, president of that organization, they exchanged on the role of these enclaves to boost the economy of the Caribbean country.

It is time to redesign the economy for the new scenarios, and free trade zones or special economic zones play an essential role in this, Marrero Cruz said at Monday's meeting at the Palace of the Revolution.

For his part, Al Zarooni highlighted the functioning of the ZED Mariel and the way the Cuban government supports that project.

The president of the World FZO praised the operations carried out in that place, especially from companies dedicated to pharmaceutical, biotechnological and food products.

He referred to the increase in the number of companies involved in projects of this type, which are generally based on knowledge management, such as financial, banking and e-commerce operations.

Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, Cuban minister of foreign trade and foreign investment; Ana Teresa Igarza Martinez, director general of the ZEDM Office; and Samir Hamrouni, director general of the World FZO, were also present at the dialogue.

ZED Mariel has 63 approved businesses, with a committed investment amount close to 3.2 billion dollars, with the presence of investors from 22 countries and 11 multinationals, and in which foreign investment modalities and different forms of Cuban management are present.
