Havana, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Wednesday thanked South Africa for its proposal to nominate the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Cuba is grateful to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his Cabinet for the proposal to nominate the Henry Reeve Medical Contingent for the Nobel Peace Prize. Their recognition honors the noble mission of our doctors, Diaz-Canel wrote.

On Monday, Ramaphosa highlighted Cuba's assistance, particularly in the field of public health.

Addressing the nation in a televised speech about the adjustment of measures to prevent and fight the Covid-19 pandemic, the president noted Cuba's contribution in that area.

Faithful to its history, the president recalled in his speech that the small island nation has demonstrated its solidarity with the most affected countries, sending over 3,700 specialists around the world to help to fight Covid-19.

In recognition of that effort, Ramaphosa noted, South Africa's Cabinet agreed to draft a nomination of the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Physicians Specializing in Disaster Situations and Major Epidemics for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

In Africa alone, he underscored when elaborating on the proposal, by the end of November 2020, Cuban healthcare professionals had treated more than 38,000 patients.
