Diaz-Canel highlights Cuba's contribution against illiteracy

Havana, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Wednesday highlighted Cuba's contribution to eradicate illiteracy as an example of the possibility of building a better world.
 
Over 10 million people have become literate with the Cuban Yes, I Can method. A demonstration of true collaboration to achieve a better world, which is possible, the president wrote on his Twitter account.

The head of State referred to data disclosed here regarding the literacy of 10,611,282 people from 30 nations with such teaching method created in Cuba.

Granma newspaper on Wednesday published an interview with the director of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education (MINED), Eva Escalona, who assured that the program currently benefits indigenous communities in Australia and Mozambique, adding that in Mexico and Haiti it was stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Currently, the MINED collaborates in 13 countries, with 290 professionals who advise the Ministries of Education and teach at different educational levels.

The YES I Can program was created by specialists from the Latin American and Caribbean Pedagogical Institute, an agency of the Ministry of Education, following an idea by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

President Diaz-Canel's message came in the context of the International Pedagogy Congress 2021, convened by Cuba and taking place virtually due to the world health crisis, although with the participation of specialists from 27 countries.
