Damascus, Apr 24 (Prensa Latina) The rocket that exploded last Thursday near the Israeli nuclear reactor in Dimona was a second-generation SA-5, modernized by Syrian Air Defense personnel, Syrian media reported.

The missile was launched by an anti-aircraft defense battery at an Israeli fighter jet preparing to engage targets within Syrian territory from the north of the occupied Palestinian territories, military sources reported to the Rai Al-Youm diary.

The Israeli plane managed to maneuver and avoid the missile, which ended up flying 250 kilometers and exploded near the Dimona nuclear facility in the Negev region, having circumvented all advanced Israeli air defense systems.

The F-16 was almost hit by the missile but managed to evade it, however the missile itself continued flight and was not intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome, sources clarified.

According to these sources, the SA-5 terrorized the Israeli pilots because it almost hit the fighter jet despite advanced electronic countermeasures.

Syrian defenses intercepted the missiles launched by the Israeli aviation and managed to shoot down most of them, but others missed their targets, including the one launched by the battery in question.
