The Public Health system in Holguin province closed 2020 with an infant mortality rate of 3.4 death per every 1,000 live births, one of the lowest in its history and in Cuba.

Catherine Chibas, deputy director of Medical Assistance at the Public Health Directorate (DSP), explained on Friday that this figure is the fourth lowest in that category in the history of this eastern territory, one of the largest in Cuba, with a population of more than one million.

Four of all 14 municipalities reported zero mortality rate in 2020, and four reported less than 4.0, among children under one year of age.

'This achievement is the result of the multidisciplinary work of the sector in the last ten years, when the protocols of primary and secondary care have been updated and improved in order to raise the quality of life and the health of pregnant and post-partum women and children,' the doctor said.

Edwin Regis, deputy director for the Mother-Child Program in that medical center, pointed out that in 2020, almost 8,000 children were born there, out of 9,643 in the province, to end up with an infant mortaility rate of 2.2, lower than that of 2019, when it was 3.8.

Cuba reported an infant mortality rate of 4.9 last year, one of the lowest in the region of the Americas, showing the priority of the Mother-Child Program for the country's government and health system.
