Cuban president urges a world of brotherhood and justice

Havana, May 13 (RHC)-- The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, evoked this Wednesday the words of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, about the possibility of a world where brotherhood and justice prevail.

On his Twitter account, the president shared a fragment of a speech by Fidel Castro where he expressed that this world "that we dream of" can be possible "when men and womne have the knowledge, the culture and the conscience" to live and act under these principles.

Fidel said these words on May 13, 2002 -- 18 years ago -- at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), during a visit made by the Commander in Chief together with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

In his speech to the students of the center, he stressed that the Cuban government is making a great effort so that in Cuba, equal opportunities exist for all, "but we have not yet achieved that."

Fidel Castro recalled that Cuba found this effort difficult because it started from poverty, from which, he said, more than 140 countries started in greater or lesser degree.  As is the case today, he called attention to the difficult situation in Latin America, which has since been considered the region of the world where the greatest difference between rich and poor exists.

"It is known that in many countries, the richest 10 percent of the population owns more than 50 percent of the wealth and assets that are created in those nations," he said.

In another part of his words, he pointed to the importance for their academic and human formation that at ELAM young people from Latin America and the United States should be prepared and able to study together.
