The Deputy Prime Minister of Cuba, Inés María Chapman, denied this Friday the false news circulating on social networks about the alleged rupture of a dam in the municipality of San Antonio del Sur, in the province of Guantanamo.

Chapman shared on social networks a video from the dam, where she was able to personally verify that it was a false alarm, "which was spread maliciously," she said.

The deputy minister made a call “to people who have no human sensitivity, who have no sensitivity to the times we are living, times in which the population is united in the recovery phase and in which we will continue to work.”

She warned that, despite the need to be alert due to the persistent rains, the people can be sure that there is no danger in the dam.  “It is safe and has an infrastructure created by the Revolution that allows water to be stored,” she emphasized.

The Los Asientos Dam, whose normal level is 17.5 million cubic meters, accumulated 20.7 million due to the heavy rains of Hurricane Oscar, but its maximum capacity is 22.4.

According to territorial authorities, the reservoir can handle large volumes of water, avoiding flooding in the community.

Hurricane Oscar, downgraded to a tropical storm before leaving the island, caused severe damage in the municipalities of Imías, Baracoa, San Antonio del Sur and Maisí, in the eastern province of Guantánamo.   (Source: Prensa Latina)
