Havana, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Society of Nephrology highlighted the results that Cuba shows today in this medical specialty, which improves the quality of life of patients affected by kidney problems in the Caribbean nation.

Luis Perez-Oliva, president of the group, explained that at this moment there are 56 services of this type throughout the national territory, which are attended three times a week by people who need to be dialyzed.

He reported on the steps taken with the French Development Bank, which granted a loan that will allow -together with the Cuban part- the progressive replacement of the old technology with a more modern one.

The financing will also be used to put nine services into operation, five of which are the result of this relationship.

Meanwhile, the rest of the artificial kidneys will use the water treatment systems that exist in most of the country’s hospitals.

The peritoneal dialysis service, in its cyclic ambulatory modality, already benefits all the nation’s infants who need it, and between those remaining in 2022 and next year, another 200 adult patients will also benefit from it.

A module containing a mobile water treatment system and the respective hemodialysis equipment will be installed in 25 hospitals in the country, which will be used in the treatment of those seriously ill, explained Perez-Oliva, according to Granma newspaper.

The Public Health Ministry is creating the conditions to restart, where possible, the transplant program, which had to be stopped in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, said the president of the Cuban Society of Nephrology.
