On the occasion of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, Rodriguez demanded fair compensation for the peoples affected by slavery.

The International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is commemorated every August 23rd since 1998 in memory of the uprising that occurred in Saint Domingue, present-day Haiti, in 1791, which would be of the utmost importance for the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

The commemoration seeks to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of peoples, and encourage collective reflection on the historical causes, methods and consequences of that tragedy, and the interactions that it has given rise to between Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean
