Cuba keeps low prevalence of HIV infection

Havana, Nov 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuba has a low prevalence of infection by the Human Immunodeficency Virus (HIV), thanks to the reduction of new cases and fatalities this year, national experts indicate.

In 2015, this was the first country in the world to suppress HIV transmission from mother to child, an acchievement that still stands today, as it advances towards the elimination of the sexual transmission of this disease, Dr. Maria Isela Lantero, from the STI-HIV/AIDS and hepatitis of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), told Prensa Latina.

The work of this Caribbean nation to contribute to the end of this epidemic is aligned with the 2020 UNAIDS Goals, known as 90-90-90, as its objective is to diagnose that percentage of people living with HIV, guarantee continous antirretroviral therapy for them and achieve viral suppression.

Since 1986, when the first cases were detected in this country, until October, 35,000 people have been diagnosed with this disease, of whom 28,756 are still alive, Jose Juanes Fiol, in charge of monitoring and assessment from MINSAP National STI-HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis Program, told the media.

Every Dec.1, the World AIDS Day is celebrated, an opportunity to raise more awareness about this disease and promote actions in terms of global prevention and treatment.
