Cuba demands US respect its sovereignty
Fernandez de Cossio informed on the direct involvement of US Charge d'Affaires in Havana Timothy Zuñiga-Brown in support of the protagonists of an alleged hunger strike in a Havana neighborhood.
With this action, posted on social media, the members of the so-called San Isidro Movement tried to force the release of one of its members, who was sentenced on contempt of authority charges.
The US diplomat was summoned on Saturday to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convey him the rules of behavior established by the Vienna Convention, and that Cuba will not allow any state to interfere in its internal affairs, he said.
According to a press release from the island's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued that day, Fernandez de Cossio asked Zuñiga-Brown to convey that statement to the US Department of State.
Cuba does not accept such behavior, and it will not allow him and his Embassy to conduct themselves in Cuba in contempt of the law and norms, in violation of their obligations as diplomats, he said.
He also made clear that the Cuban government 'is fully aware of the US involvement in financing, guiding and inciting groups and individuals to challenge the government's authority, both through peaceful means and violent ways.'
He also denounced the insistent effort in trying to add to those purposes the most representative sectors of art, culture and the intelligentsia, and the use of social media in order to spread false information, incite hatred, and call for illegality.
