Cuba congratulates new CARICOM Secretary-General

Havana, May 12 (RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez congratulated the newly elected Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Belize's Carla Barnett.

On Twitter, he extended his congratulations to the 'Community with which Cuba maintains ties of brotherhood and solidarity.

Barnett served from 1997 to 2002 as deputy Secretary-General of CARICOM and will now take over as its leader on August 15 to become the first woman to be elected to that post.

CARICOM is an international organization formed in 1973 to promote economic integration and cooperation among its members and coordinate foreign policy.

Headquartered in Guyana, its membership includes 15 Caribbean nations and five British dependencies.
