Cuba condemns manipulation of nuclear arms control matters

Havana, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed the need to do away with political manipulation, selectivity and double standards in matters of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

On his Twitter account, the Cuban leader affirmed that his country ratified its firm position in favor of the prohibition and total elimination of this type of weaponry, in the general debate of the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), of the United Nations.

The head of State attached to his message the speech of the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to that multilateral organization, Yuri Gala, in which he affirmed that the only sustainable solution to the threat is the total, transparent, irreversible and verifiable elimination of that arsenal. Gala described as unacceptable that some States use the resources that should be allocated to confront the multidimensional effects of Covid-19, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, to continue developing new types of nuclear weapons.

He also pointed out that it is neither fair nor acceptable that one group of signatory nations strictly comply with all NPT obligations while others do not.

Nor is it fair that certain countries are condemned and demonized for alleged violations of the non-proliferation regime by the same States that continue to perfect their nuclear arsenals, supplying and transferring technologies, the Cuban ambassador said.
