In Cuba, 100 % of maternity benefits were increased by salary

In the context of the Ordering Task, 100 percent of maternity benefits were increased by the new salaries. “Maternity protection in Cuba, through social security, is a right of Cuban women”, assured Marta Elena Feitó Cabrera, Minister of Labor and Social Security.

This right is approached in Decree- Law 20, contained in the Extraordinary Official Gazette No. 68, on the implementation of the monetary reorganization process, which explains the transitory procedure for the calculation of the monetary benefits for maternity of state sector workers.

And in 339, on the maternity of the female worker, it seeks to grant rights to the working mother and father, in what corresponds to each, in order to enable shared responsibility within the family in the care and attention of minor children. The duration of the pre and postnatal maternity leave is 18 weeks, which is among the longest worldwide, and after its expiration a social benefit is granted until the child reaches the first year of life.

At present, 52,444 enjoy these benefits and seven of them are men, highlights a tweet posted by the minister.       

Although 2020 put the health capacities of all the world's systems to the test, Cuba did not skimp on the well-being of the newborn and its mother The Directorate of Medical Records and Statistics of the Ministry of Public Health reports that 105,030 children were born in Cuba last year, and the nation reached an infant mortality rate of 4.9 per every 1,000 live births, 36 deaths fewer than in 2019.

Also the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has urged to continue working on the allocation of homes for mothers with several children, and to work with intelligence and adequate monitoring, seeking larger number of births.
