Havana, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Basketball Federation informed that the national male team will not participate in the imminent qualifying round for the 2022 America Cup due to the current epidemiological situation in the country.

The federation argued that Covid-19 had an impact on the training and call of the main players in Cuba to participate in the competition that will take place in Puerto Rico in a 'bubble' format from Feb.15-22.

The press release, published by Jit digital daily, reported that the pandemic also resulted in difficulties to ensure visas for all members of the delegation.

'We wanted to go to Puerto Rico until the very last moment, but the situation is beyond our possibilities, and we will no disrespect the event or the rich history of Cuban basketball by presenting an incomplete delegation and without the required preparation,' according to the statement.

The Cuban Basketball Federation added that it informed FIBA Americas 'about this problem and decision, and at the same time, we are offering Havana as an alternative venue for pending games between Canada and the Dominican Republic, in a day and conditions suitable for all.'

Cuba made its debut in this qualifying tournament with a defeat and a victory, respectively, against the Virgin Islands in February, 2020, and was later defeated by the Dominican team in December, 2020.
