Havana, Aug 18 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent condolences to the families and friends of those who died during a major fire in the industrial zone of the western city of Matanzas.

From his Twitter account, the president reiterated that the island is in official mourning, for two days, as a tribute to the “valuable lives that were lost in the confrontation with the fire at the Supertanqueros base”.

On the same platform, the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and head of its Ideological Department, Rogelio Polanco, expressed that this will be a day of grief and solidarity of the Caribbean nation in view of the loss of human lives.

Likewise, the official of the Ideological Department of the PCC Central Committee Enrique Villuendas sent a message of support to the families and stressed that the mourning is not only limited to official buildings, but to all Cuba. Eternal glory to our heroes, he stressed.

The day before, Dr. Jorge Gonzalez, during a press conference, said that it was impossible to identify the remains of the 14 people missing in the incident.

Due to the high temperatures at the disaster site it was impossible to have the elements used to identify the bodies: DNA, teeth and fingerprints.

Tomorrow, Friday, the funeral honors of those who died in the line of duty will be held, so the population will be able to express their feelings of pain and solidarity, by paying a well-deserved tribute from 10:00 to 17:00, local time, at the museum of the Firefighters in the city of Matanzas.
