Santiago de Chile, Oct 17 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of protesters on Friday took over the central Plaza de la Dignidad (Baquedano) of this capital, while other riots were also reported in separate cities such as Valparaíso, Concepción and Temuco.

That was the culmination of a week that ends on the eve of one year anniversary of October 8´s social outbreak, as thousands of Chileans are expected to take to the streets as part of the actions for such an anniversary.

Protesters went to the emblematic Plaza de la Dignidad bearing Chilean and Mapuche flags, playing pans and drums and chanting songs to express their strongly rejection of the government with repeated slogans against President Sebastián Piñera.

Some rioters painted the pedestal and the equestrian statue of General Manuel Baquedano in red, at the base of which they placed a wreath with the phrase 'For the fallen', a fact described by authorities as a 'desecration', although for its authors it was a symbolic gesture in homage to the victims of repression.

As on so many other occasions, the demonstration took place peacefully on the esplanade, with some clashes between law enforcement officers and groups of hooded men on Vicuña Mackenna avenue and other roads where barricades were set on fire.

Senate President Adriana Muñoz, on the other hand, announced on Friday the establishment of a table of reparation, truth and justice for victims of human rights violations due to police repression.
