Argentina is in mourning for Mafalda's father

Buenos Aires, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) Argentines have been saying goodbye on Wednesday with great shock to one of their most brilliant artists, the cartoonist Joaquin Salvador Lavado (Quino), whose death has left great sadness in the country where he was born 88 years ago.

In Argentina, hundreds are in mourning for him but also in other regions of Latin America, in Chile, Paraguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico and Cuba, where Lavado left his mark with his Quinoscope, a series of six short films based on his drawings and made by another great creator and teacher, Juan Padron, who passed away in March, 2020.

On social networks, which became a space for dialogue and the most immediate way to interact, Argentines express their infinite sadness for Quino's death, the father of the friendly and populous Mafalda.

With a video from October 15, 2012, when the Julio Le Parc Cultural Center was launched in Mendoza, the former president and current Vice President Cristina Fernandez paid tribute to the creator. 'Quino and the changuita to govern Argentina. Goodbye teacher,' she wrote.

In the audiovisual, Fernandez points out that Quino with his Mafalda enlightened a whole generation and said the things that could not be said in a forbidden time. Mafalda, she stated, is linked to our whole history. You are one of those who occupy the gallery of popular idols.

'We are deeply saddened by the death of the beloved graphic artist Joaquin Salvador Lavado, known as Quino and father of the unforgettable Mafalda, his most endearing character. Beloved and admired by all his colleagues, he leaves an indelible legacy in Argentine culture,' the Ministry of Culture noted.

Several artists, the intelligentsia, politicians and above all ordinary citizens thank the teacher with a forever goodbye and highlight Lavado's smart humor that characterized him through his multiple creations.

Today, with his departure, in these times where love and peace are urgent, especially in a polarized Argentina and in a world sick due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many invite us to read again and find in Mafalda those reflections so necessary in these hard times.
